Konjunktiv II in the Past, Part 1 of 2
Say what would have happened with "hätte" or "wäre" plus the participle, and build unreal past wenn-clauses with the verb at the end.
Pattern Practice: Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, ...
Use one frame with many verbs to react to a bad surprise: "Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich zu Hause geblieben", "... hätte ich dich angerufen".
Minimal Pairs: Ich hätte / Ich wäre
Choose the right auxiliary: "hätte" for most verbs, "wäre" for movement, change of state, "sein", "bleiben", "werden" and "passieren".
Circuit: Hätte ich das gewusst, ...
Drop the "wenn" and put "hätte" or "wäre" first ("Hätte ich das gewusst, wäre ich gekommen"), adding "dann" or "so" if you like.

Wish the past were different ("Hätte ich bloß nichts gesagt!") and mix past conditions with present results.

Ask what others would have done in your place, and answer with "An deiner Stelle hätte ich ..." or "... wäre ich ...".
