Un viejo que leía novelas de amor

Luis Sepúlveda

Patria

Fernando Aramburu

Soldados de Salamina

Javier Cercas

A journalist investigates a real incident from the Spanish Civil War, in which a Republican soldier let a captured Falangist writer escape execution. Written in a clear, almost reportorial style that keeps the historical material from feeling academic.

La casa de Bernarda Alba

Federico García Lorca

A domineering mother locks her five daughters away in mourning after their father's death, and the household slowly suffocates under her rule. As a play, it's almost entirely dialogue, which tends to move faster than descriptive prose.

El tiempo entre costuras

María Dueñas

A young seamstress flees to Morocco after being abandoned by her fiancé, and ends up drawn into espionage during the Spanish Civil War and WWII. A long, plot-heavy historical novel that keeps you reading for the story as much as the language.

Free advanced Spanish reading practice

At the Advanced level, the stories stop simplifying. Expect the full range of tenses, the imperfect subjunctive, si clauses, and idiomatic expressions, in stories about work, family conflict, and hard decisions.

These are good preparation for reading real novels in Spanish, which you'll also find recommended below. Every original story is free and comes with comprehension questions.
